The course page and its tabs

Every course has its own page, reached by choosing the course in the Library. It is the page learners see before they start, and it is also where you edit the course, mark open-text answers, read course survey results, see who published it and correct learners’ records. Which tabs you see depends on your permissions.

Screenshot missingcourse-page-overview

The course page for a published course with a category, seen by an administrator. The hero shows the category overline, title, description, the meta chips (modules, level, duration, Course) and the buttons Start course, Edit course, the bookmark and the share icon, with the thumbnail on the right. Below, the tab bar shows About, Reviews (3), Submissions, Survey results, History and Admin, with About selected and the Your progress and Course details cards on the right.

  1. Choose Library at the top of the page. The Courses list opens.
  2. Choose the course. Its page opens on About.

Back to courses at the top takes you back to the list.

The top of the page is the course as learners find it: its title, its description, and a row of chips for the number of modules, the level, how long it takes and what kind of course it is. A course whose language is not English shows the language too.

A course waiting for a publish approval shows Pending approval as its first chip. It is the only status the page shows. There is no chip for draft or published; the course’s status is shown in the library list.

Once people are enrolled, administrators also see how many, as 12 enrolled with their pictures, and the star rating appears once there is at least one published review.

ButtonWhat it does
Start courseOpens the course as a learner. It becomes Resume course, Restart course or Retake course depending on where you are with it. You only see it if your role can start courses
Edit courseOpens the course in the course builder. See Adding and ordering content in a course
Edit settingsShown instead of Edit course for SCORM, xAPI and in-person courses, which have nothing to build, and on a phone. It opens Course settings
BookmarkBookmark course saves the course to your bookmarks. Remove bookmark takes it off
ShareShare course copies a link to the page, and to the tab you are on, ready to paste

Edit course and Edit settings need the Upsert course permission. On a draft, Start course is greyed out with Cannot start a draft course, because a draft cannot be taken until it is published.

Duplicating, translating, renaming, publishing, moving to draft and deleting a course are not on this page. They are in the course’s three-dot menu in the library list. See Finding and organising courses in the library.

About is the course’s description for learners, and everyone who can see the course sees it.

  • What you’ll learn lists the course’s learning objectives, from Course settings.
  • Course content lists the modules in order with the total time. Choose a module to open its description. See Writing a module description.
  • Skills you’ll gain lists the skills the course is tagged with. See Tagging a course with skills.
  • A course that is part of a learning path says so, with a link to each path.

On the right, Your progress shows how far you are through the course yourself, and Course details lists the Content type, Level, Language, Duration, whether there is a Certificate and an Assessment, when it was Last updated, and the course’s Owner and Instructor.

On an in-person course the list is Sessions instead, where you can add learners, take attendance and cancel a session. See Scheduling sessions for in-person training.

Reviews shows the star ratings and written reviews learners have left, with the average and how the ratings split from five stars down to one. Everyone who can see the course sees this tab, and the number beside it is how many reviews are showing.

Only reviews that have been approved appear here. You cannot approve, hide or delete a review from this tab; that is done under Course reviews in Admin. See Moderate course reviews.

Use Search to find a review by what it says or who wrote it, sort by Name, Most recent or By rating, and use Filter to show only certain star ratings. Anonymous reviews show as Anonymous, sort after named ones and are not found by searching for a name. A course moved back to draft keeps showing its reviews here.

Submissions lists every learner who has answered the course’s questions, so you can see what they answered and mark open-text answers. You need the View course submissions permission to see it.

Each row shows the Learner, their Status, Score, how many Answers they gave, how many are waiting To check, and which Attempt it was. Sort by To check to bring the answers that need you to the top.

Choose View submission from the row’s three-dot menu. The top of the page shows the learner’s status, how many answers are waiting to be reviewed, their attempt, and when they Started and Completed it. Back to submissions returns to the list. Each question is shown as the learner saw it, with their answer and whether it was Correct, Partly correct, Incorrect, Awaiting marking or Not scored, and the marks it earned.

Open-text answers with scoring switched on are marked automatically against the question’s What earns marks criteria, and the mark is a proposal you can change. Each criterion shows Met, Partly met or Not met, with the evidence from the answer, and Needs a check on any the automatic marking was unsure of. How a question is set up to be marked is covered in Adding questions and scoring to a course.

  1. Change the verdict on any criterion you disagree with. The panel shows Mark changing from 2 to 3.
  2. Type into Why are you changing this?. A reason is required, and it is recorded against the learner’s result.
  3. Choose Save mark, or Discard changes to leave it as it was.

If your change takes the learner below the pass mark, you are warned first with This will change the course result. Saving it fails the learner and withdraws a certificate they already have, so read the answer carefully before going ahead.

Screenshot missingsubmission-open-text-marking

A learner's submission opened from the Submissions tab, scrolled to an open-text answer. The learner's answer is shown, and under it the marking breakdown lists three criteria with Met, Partly met and Not met, one tagged Needs a check. One verdict has been changed, the panel reads "Mark changing from 2 to 3.", Why are you changing this? has a reason typed in, and Save mark and Discard changes are visible.

Survey results shows the answers learners gave to the course survey, question by question, and has Send survey for sending it by hand. You see it if you have the View course survey results permission or you are the course’s owner. Learning paths do not have this tab.

How course surveys are set up, sent and read is covered in Run course surveys.

History is a log of what has happened to the course: when it was created, published, moved to draft, sent for approval and approved, declined or sent back. You need the Manage course engagements permission to see it, because it names people and repeats a publish approver’s reasons.

ColumnWhat it shows
EventWhat happened: Course created, Sent for approval, Approval request withdrawn, Approved, Declined, Sent back for revision or Status changed
DetailThe change of status, such as Moved from Draft to Published, or the publish approver’s reason
PersonWho did it, or Not recorded where nobody was
WhenHow long ago

Use Search history to find an event, a person or a reason. History shows events, not content. To see what the course said at an earlier point, or to put an old version back, use Version history in the builder. See Course version history and restoring a version.

Admin lists every learner’s engagement with the course, and is where you correct a record the system has wrong, export the list or delete a record made by mistake. You need the Manage course engagements permission. See Administering engagements on a course.

How the course page differs for other kinds of course

Section titled “How the course page differs for other kinds of course”
KindWhat changes
SCORMEdit settings instead of Edit course. Your progress may say This course doesn’t report progress, and learners may see Start again
xAPINo About tab, so the page opens on Reviews. The start button opens the course in a new tab, and reads Revisit course once you have finished it. Approval pending and Max attempts reached show greyed out
In-personShown as External. About lists Sessions, and the start button becomes Enrol, Join waitlist or Choose session
Learning pathChips count courses rather than modules, Edit path opens the path builder, and there are no Submissions or Survey results tabs; each course in the path has its own

Why can I not see the Admin or History tab?

Section titled “Why can I not see the Admin or History tab?”

Both need the Manage course engagements permission. Without it you see About, Reviews and any other tabs your role allows.

Why does the course page not say whether a course is a draft?

Section titled “Why does the course page not say whether a course is a draft?”

The page only flags Pending approval. Check the course’s status in the library list, or look at History, which shows each move between draft and published.

Why is a review in Admin, Course reviews not on the course page?

Section titled “Why is a review in Admin, Course reviews not on the course page?”

Only approved reviews are shown on the course page. A new review waits in Course reviews until somebody approves it.

From the course’s three-dot menu in the library list, or Publish in the course builder. They are not on the course page.
