Setting a course's cost, language and look

The rest of the Advanced tab holds a course’s cost, its language, and how it looks. None of them changes what a completion is worth — unlike attempts, pass marks and certificates, which do. Cost and language are usually set once and left alone; the design settings are ones you can come back to at any time.

Cost amount in pounds, and a cost unit: per person, per course, per day, or none.

Cost is recorded for reporting rather than charged to anybody. Learnient does not take payment for a course.

The part worth knowing: the cost is copied onto each engagement when somebody takes the course, not looked up afterwards.

So raising the price next year does not retrospectively change what last year’s completions cost. Your historic figures stay as they were, which is what you want from a cost report and the opposite of what most people expect from a settings field.

For a learning path, the cost shown is worked out from the courses inside it rather than set on the path.

A course carries one language. It is a label for filtering and for anybody browsing, and it does not translate anything — a course written in English and marked German stays in English.

Translating a course is a separate action, from the row menu in the library.

Giving one course its own colours and fonts

Section titled “Giving one course its own colours and fonts”

By default a course follows your account’s branding, and the fields say so: Follows your brand.

Turn on Give this course its own look in the Design section to change that. You can set an accent colour, a heading font, a body font and a page name font. Anything you leave blank keeps following the brand, so a course can take its own colour and still pick up a later change of font.

Turn the switch off and the course goes back to following your branding in full.

What saving a design change does to the course

Section titled “What saving a design change does to the course”

Saving applies the change to the course you are looking at. Colours and type are updated across every module — the section tells you how many before you save — and page layouts stay as they are. Nothing is rewritten, reordered or regenerated; the same pages say the same things in a different livery.

Note: colours and fonts you set by hand on individual items are replaced. If you have tinted one heading or one callout yourself, that change goes with the rest.

A save that changes the design records a version first, so Undo in version history puts the course back exactly as it was. The message after saving names the version it saved.

On a published course, learners keep seeing the published version until you publish again.

Design sets the visual style the course is built in — the page colour, how numbered steps are drawn, how round the corners are, whether decorative patterns are used. There are six, and Auto lets the planner choose one when a course is generated.

Changing it restyles the course you are looking at, on save, like any other design change. See How course design styles work for what each one does.

Bringing a course onto your current branding

Section titled “Bringing a course onto your current branding”

Change your branding and existing courses keep the look they were built with. That is usually what you want — a course styled in March should not quietly restyle itself in April — so Learnient offers the change rather than making it.

When a course is behind, the Design section says so: Your branding has changed since this course was made. It still looks the way it did. Tick Bring this course onto our current branding when I save and save, and the course takes your current colours and fonts.

Leave the box unticked and the course is left alone, however many times you open and save it. Nothing happens to a course’s look unless you ask for it.

Why can’t I see the Design section on this course?

Section titled “Why can’t I see the Design section on this course?”

It appears on courses built in Learnient. SCORM, xAPI, external and in-person courses have no designed content to update, and learning paths have none of their own. It also does not appear while a course is being created — save it first, then open its settings.

Does changing the design regenerate the course?

Section titled “Does changing the design regenerate the course?”

No. The words, images, questions and page order are untouched. Only colour, type and the styling of things like numbered steps change.

Will my learners see the change straight away?

Section titled “Will my learners see the change straight away?”

Not on a published course. The change is a draft like any other and reaches learners when you publish the course again.
