Adding and ordering content in a course

A course you build in Learnient is made of modules, and each module is made of components such as headings, text, images and questions. This article covers adding modules and components, putting components in order and splitting a module into pages. Nothing you change reaches learners until you publish, with one exception: deleting a module from a published course takes effect as soon as you save. The controls around the canvas, such as backgrounds, the accessibility checker, animation, AI and Preview, are in Using the course builder’s canvas tools.

  1. Choose Library at the top of the page. The Courses list opens on Published. Courses that are not yet published are under Draft.
  2. Choose the course. This opens the course’s own page, not the builder.
  3. Choose Edit course. The builder opens with the list of components on the left, the module you are working on in the middle and Modules on the right.
  1. Choose the + at the top of Modules. A new module is added below the others and opens empty. It takes the lowest number not already in use, such as Module 2.
  2. To rename it, choose the three-dot menu on the module and then Rename. Two modules in the same course cannot have the same name.
  3. The same menu has Edit description and Duplicate.
  4. Delete only appears in that menu once the course has more than one module. Choosing it asks Delete module?, and Delete module removes the module and everything in it when you save. Until then, Undo brings it back.
  5. To change the order of modules, drag a module by its handle, or see Reordering modules for doing it from the keyboard.

Modules also lists Cover, Contents and Closing page. These are not modules, and the tick beside each one decides whether learners see it. Module descriptions, duplicating and the three pages around your modules are covered in Modules, the cover, contents and closing page.

  1. Choose the module under Modules.
  2. Find the component you want in the list on the left. The components are grouped under Text, Media, Assessments, Add-ons, Interactive, Dynamic Elements and Layout. Type into Search components to find one by name.
  3. Drag the component into the module and drop it where you want it. Or click it, or press Enter or Space on it, to add it at the end of the module and move it into place afterwards.
    1. An empty module shows Ready to build? until you add the first component.
  4. Click the component to fill it in. A toolbar opens above it. What each component is for, and the settings in its toolbar, are in Course builder components and their settings.
  1. Click the component you want to move. The toolbar that opens has Move up one, Move down one, Move to top and Move to bottom.
  2. The same toolbar has Duplicate and Delete. Choosing Delete asks Delete component? first.
    1. Deleting a columns layout that has components in its columns asks Delete column layout? instead, because it deletes those components too. Choose Delete layout and blocks to go ahead.

The heading is selected and its toolbar is showing, with Move up one, Move down one, Move to top, Move to bottom, Duplicate and Delete visible at the right-hand end. Modules on the right lists Cover, Contents, two modules and Closing page.

  1. Type “page” into Search components and drag Page break to the point where the new page should start.
  2. If you want, type a name for the page in Name this page (optional).
  3. The page break shows which page follows it, such as PAGE 2 OF 2, and the pages appear under the module in Modules. A page break with nothing after it does not start a new page.
  4. To take a page break out, select it and choose Delete in its toolbar. The pages either side of it become one.
  5. To give the page its own background, choose Page background, the palette button on its page break.

Page breaks only go inside modules. You cannot add one to the cover, contents or closing page.

Learners see a module with page breaks one page at a time. A module without page breaks is a single page. The module counts as complete when they move on from its last page.

Choose Save as draft at the top right. You will see Course saved. To publish instead, choose the arrow beside Save as draft and then Publish.

This section covers courses you build in Learnient. SCORM and xAPI courses are not versioned, so your changes reach everyone the moment you publish, including anyone part-way through, and Publish never asks whether people who have finished need to do it again.

Anyone part-way through the course carries on with the version they started until they finish it, including its modules and their order. Everyone else gets your changes.

If people have already completed the course, Publish first asks whether they need to do it again. If you choose Yes - everyone needs to do it again, their completions stop counting straight away and you cannot change that later. Their scores are kept, and they see Retake course.

If your account approves course changes before learners see them, Publish opens Send for approval instead. Learners keep seeing the approved course until your changes are approved.
