How lists fit your screen

Every list in Learnient fits the width of your window. You never have to scroll a list sideways to find a column or the actions menu; instead, the list makes room by wrapping, shortening and, when space is really tight, hiding the columns that matter least.

What always shows in full in a list

The first three columns of a list always show in full. A long name, such as a course title or a person’s name, wraps onto a second or third line rather than being cut off, so you can always read what a row is.

The actions menu, the three dots at the end of each row, is always there too, however narrow the window.

What the ”…” in a list means

The other columns share the space that is left. When a value is too long for its column, it is shortened with …. Point at a shortened value to read all of it, or open the record.

Why some columns disappear on a narrower window

On a narrower window there may not be room for every column, even shortened. The list then hides columns, starting with the least important, and keeps the ones most people read. When a column is hidden, a small count such as +2 appears at the end of the header row. Point at it to see which columns are hidden.

To see a hidden column, do any of these:

• Widen the window. The columns come back as soon as there is room for them
• Open the record, which shows everything about it
• Export the list. An export always includes every column, whatever your window hides

Lists on a phone or tablet

On a phone, lists show as cards rather than a table, one card per row, with each column’s value labelled inside the card.

Some lists, such as people, positions and the audit log, also switch to cards on a screen narrower than a typical laptop, and back to a table on a wider one.

Tables that still scroll sideways

Report tables and the tables Lenni gives you in an answer work differently, because you choose their columns. They show every column you asked for at full width, so a wide one scrolls sideways rather than hiding anything.
